Snow Leopard Screenshots

I have been using Snow Leopard on my external FW400 HDD for the last few weeks and I thought you guys would like to see some screenshots of it. I am running Geekbench on both Operating Systems as a performance comparison. The results so far have been inconclusive on my iMac; however, they should be better on my Mac Pro, due to its two extra processing cores. Enjoy the screenshots below:

UPDATE: Since Geekbench is not optimized for Snow Leopard you should not expect to see much of a performance benefit in Snow Leopard.

The Conclusive Guide To Wordpress Optimization

I have been asked countless times how I optimize my Wordpress installations, and I have finally found the time to write a complete guide for you. The purpose of this guide is to cover every technique that I perform for a Wordpress optimization. This is not meant to be the “digg-proofing guide for n00bs”, which is why I recommend that you are comfortable editing code and getting your hands dirty. After covering the basics, be prepared to start editing some code on your Wordpress theme.

Part 1: The Basics

1) Wordpress Object Cache: queen made in heaven Wild Things 2 rip Wordpress includes a built-in object cache that can save you some precious database queries. It probably won’t make a dramatic difference, but every little bit helps. All you need to do to take advantage of this feature is add the following code to your wp-config.php file:

2) Caching Plugins:

The simplest and easiest way to optimize your Wordpress installation is to cache the pages so the database doesn’t get hit every time a reader loads a page. The best plugin for the job is WP Super Cache. Its caching method works by serving your Wordpress pages from a static file, thus eliminating the PHP and MySQL overhead. Whenever a user requests a page not present in the cache it is generated dynamically then added to the cache. If any of the page’s contents have changed the cache for that page will be deleted, so that an updated cache can be created. I usually recommend that users do not change the settings other than the cache expiration time, which I usually set to 100 minutes.

3) Removing Plugins:

A vanilla Wordpress install is actually fairly lightweight, but add a dozen plugins and Wordpress will seem more bloated than I am after going to a Mexican all you can eat buffet. If you are not using a plugin or do not need to use it, please do yourself a favor and disable it now. Plugins have one the biggest effects on the speed of your Wordpress install. Don’t blame Wordpress for something you installed.

4) Display less posts on your blog’s homepage: Force 10 from Navarone dvdrip By reducing the number of posts that display on your homepage less MySQL queries are made. All you need to do is change the number in Settings -> Reading -> Blog pages show at most. Try to keep this number between 5-10.

5) Optimize your Database: I recommend that you make a backup of your database before you begin. First, open up PhpMyAdmin. Then, select your database on the frame on the left. On the right side scroll down until you see the “check all” link. After you click the link select “optimize” from the dropdown menu next to it.

For this section we will be focusing on decreasing the load time for visitors by reducing the page size and the number of HTTP requests. For detailed information about your website’s load speed and page size visit this site: Web Page Analyzer.

1) Combine External Objects: If you have multiple CSS and/or Javascript files you should join the files together to reduce your HTTP Requests. Instead of the visitor loading 2 CSS files and 4 JavaScript files which is 6 HTTP Requests, they can load 1 CSS file and 1 JavaScript file and save 4 requests.

2) Compress your CSS and JavaScript files: CSS and JavaScript files can be quite large depending on what Wordpress theme you are using. By compressing these files you can make them significantly smaller and lower your load time. For CSS files you can either use a web based CSS compressor Beethoven’s 2nd on dvd

or this Wordpress plugin. If you use the compressor the top part of your CSS file which contains necessary information about the theme will be removed. After you compress it you will have to readd these lines from the original CSS file. If you use the Wordpress plugin your CSS will automatically be compressed and GZIP compressed (see below). For JavaScript files you can simply use this website to compress your JavaScript files.

3) GZIP your CSS: The plugin I mentioned above already takes care of this for you, but if you would rather do this manually its rather simple. First, add .php to the end of your CSS file’s filename. Next, change the link to your stylesheet in your theme’s header.php file to match the new filename. Example:

4) Reduce the size of your images: Use Photoshop’s “Save for Web and Devices” feature to create smaller images. For images with less complexity you should save your images as a GIF or PNG. For complex images such as photos, you should use JPG.

5) Combine Images: If your site has a lot of CSS images you should consider combining images to save HTTP requests. Headers and footers often have multiple images which can easily be combined into one image.

5) Remove Unnecessary Bloat: Many themes include optional features and support for additional plugins. If you do not use these features or plugins you can remove the code for them in your theme and reduce the number of PHP and MySQL calls you make. You should also avoid using JavaScript whenever possible to further reduce your bloat.

Part 3: The Server (does not apply for shared hosting)

1) Optimize your Apache Config: Apache is designed to be easy to use and very compatible by default, but this one size fits all approach comes with a performance penalty. It is fairly easy edit your Apache configuration, as all of the configuration is stored in your httpd.conf file which is usually found here /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. The first step to making Apache run faster is to comment out any modules that you are not using as they will increase Apache’s start time and eat up your precious memory. The next step is to change some of Apache’s parameters. There is no perfect configuration, so I can only provide you with a configuration that I found to work quite nicely on some of my servers.

Before making any changes to your httpd.conf file you should familiarize yourself with the configuration settings here.

2) MySQL Query Cache: MySQL has a built-in query caching feature that stores the byte-text of queries. To turn this feature on open your my.cnf file located here: /etc/my.cnf and add the following lines:

query_cache_type = 1
query_cache_size = 26214400

3) Optimize your PHP Config: Much like Apache PHP likes to load extensions that it thinks you need, but are a waste of resources in most circumstances. Go through your php.ini file usually located here: /etc/php.ini and comment out any extensions that you don’t need. After you disable extensions you can start changing some of the settings. I recommend that you look at this guide

for more information on tuning your PHP configuration. You might also want to take a look at the settings below.

To serve pages faster you can enable compression in PHP by changing:

4) Update Everything: There is no reason why you should be running old software on your server. Update to the latest version of PHP, MySQL, and Apache immediately. The newer versions include many performance and security enhancements. Be sure to check that you are using the latest Linux kernel as well.

5) PHP Caching: You can save your web server a lot of work by using a PHP Accelerator/Cache. Each time you load a page on your blog the PHP code has to be interpreted, but you can cache this code in it’s compiled state to save resources. There are three excellent applications for this purpose: eAccelerator, APC, XCache. APC is very popular, however; it is the slowest of the bunch. To make things even easier there are Wordpress plugins available for XCache and eAccelerator.

6) Alternative Web servers: If you tried all of the other optimization tips and your server just cannot keep up, then you may want to check out an Apache alternative. Both Lighttpd and NginX are suitable high performance Apache replacements. Lighttpd should work fairly well with Wordpress out of the box, but for Nginx you will have to do some fiddling. 7) Memcached: memcached is a “distributed memory object caching system”. It stores object data into memory for fast access. To use memcached with Wordpress you need to install this plugin.

Snow Leopard Results on My Mac Pro

The Poker House dvdrip I decided to run Geekbench benchmarking tests once again on my Mac Pro. Snow Leopard is being booted off of my external Firewire hard drive again. This is not an accurate representation of the performance of Snow Leopard, as Geekbench is not yet optimized for Snow Leopard. While I was hoping for marginally better results, I do realize that this test is seriously flawed.
